I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: People want more than ever to make a difference. To move beyond worry and fear. To be confident about the future. To have influence instead of just sitting on the sidelines.
But how does this help you raise more money or enlist more key volunteers?
Ah-ha, that’s exactly the work of “fundraisers.”
You set the stage for people to take personal initiative on behalf of the greater good.
In this way, you’re at the very center of the ideals of choice, freedom and democracy.
This may seem like quite a stretch, but raising money and engaging people in voluntary action are at the core of free societies. Philanthropy and voluntarism ARE choice. After all, our work is to give people ways to do what they want to do.
So let me give you in a single word a way you can position yourself for the best success:
Alignment
Align your cause with something gigantic, like the cause of freedom and liberty — and think of your organization as an instrument through which people make choices and exert personal initiative.
And present it that way. After all, the best case we can make for our organizations, agencies and institutions is the largest case we can make, the highest ideals.
In fact, I was saying to a colleague the other day, “Many who will become your greatest advocates and invest themselves in your organization with the greatest gusto are — surprise — likely to believe in these ideals and values as much, or even more than, they believe in the work of your organization.” (Even if they’re not aware of it.)
You can think and talk like this beginning right now.
