Identifying Just One Strength Can Be a Breakthrough

by Jim Lord

On Friday I asked you if you could identify one thing that encourages you in your pursuit of the impossible.

But I didn’t do it for myself. After all, I “got it.” And who has the time for such nonsense?

This idea started with the sheet of strengths, resources and tailwinds that Dan Loritz drew up years ago to keep in his pocket. Now, he's just drafted a fresh sheet for his new adventure into public policy.

Then I thought, “Let’s see what happens if I do it, instead of thinking about it.”

So yesterday I wrote, “people have desire” on a scrap of paper and put it in my pocket. (Feeling a bit of “But I don’t do things like this.”) I’ve already found my attention refocused as I see the words when I pull out my keys. We’ll see what more happens with this little experiment.

Why is it so important to start with strength — if you have your eye on the impossible?

Because strengths inspire.

It takes being inspired — which leads to being inspiring — to achieve what seems impossible. If people are going to join with you, they’ll first want to be inspired.

Great points Jim. Strengths are certainly an important touchstone. Our ultimate strength is understanding our purpose. What is the exact energy and essence I bring to life? Understanding our natural state of being, the specific energy that emanates from us is a powerful place to stand and turns us into beacons to attract people we are meant to serve. Understanding our blessing, the gift we are meant to bring to the world helps us achieve our impossible dreams. Understanding our mission and message helps us attract like-minded world-changers who share those impossible dreams. Finally, our individual strengths help us know the particular role we can bring to that collective effort.

Hello Jim
Thanks for your inspirational messages.
Early this week after, I sent a suggestion to a ex-school mate about all ex-students in our year group coming together and raise funds for a school project for our ex-high school.

The suggestion caught fire. Emails have been going to and from all the members. Now we have about 50 or so ex-students of our school organising to raise funds for a Multi Purpose Hall project for our ex-school.

Just one little suggestion and everybody is inspired to contribute something possitive to our former school using the skills and expertise of everyone of us. It so wonderful to be doing something positive for the good of our society.
I’ll keep this forum informed when we have finally achieved our goal of constructing the multi-purpose hall for our ex-school.

Cheers
